Sovereign Debt Problems - United States Or Europe, Who Is Worse Off?

ByTom Genot

Expert Author Tom Genot

America has a very big problem, due to the financial analysts who calculate and report the US Governments debt. They only look at parts of the fiscal equation before rendering their reports. They only factor in debt where the US borrowed money. In essence where the Federal Government has sold Treasury Bonds. Financial analysts don't factor in other important government debt or obligations. Such as $6 trillion in loan obligations from Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac, which are guaranteed by the Government. Or over $1 trillion in student loans that again are guaranteed by the Federal Government. The US is required to pay on these loans in the case of default.

The reality right now is that more and more student loans and home mortgages are being defaulted on every day. But none of this debt is included in the national debt or GDP numbers. Next in line comes Social Security and Medicare obligations which also are not factored in. This is real debt that amounts to an additional $3 trillion plus dollars. Then as a nation no one factors in the debt created from the individual states that the Government is obligated to pay for. If these real numbers were actually included to determine the true US Debt and GDP numbers, then the United States would actually be in worse fiscal shape than Greece. Currently Greece is the highest indebted country within the euro zone.

What is currently happening today due to the weakness in the euro, its giving strength to the dollar under the wrong conditions. People in masses are dumping the euro and buying dollars as a safe haven asset. This allows the interest rates to be very low for the US Government to borrow more money. This creates an illusion that the US economy is in better fiscal condition than the other economies in Europe. The massive problems in Europe are currently mainstream. This is what everyone is looking at and paying more attention too.

Unfortunately this also diverts attention from the United States making it appear America is in a much better financial situation. It is only a matter of time before the real truth is apparent. The US dollar is still the worlds reserve currency, being used and traded daily in many countries. Once the house of cards that America is currently building itself upon comes crashing down, it will destroy the dollar and not only take the United States out but many other economies with it.

Gold and silver are currently still trading at enormous discounts. It's an exceptional time and opportunity currently to invest in these safe haven assets. Once the European and American economies collapse, very few hard assets will remain that will hold their true value. Investing in physical gold and silver today will insure your financial future tomorrow and beyond.

Failure of the single currency in Europe

Posted: Dec 08, 2011 |Comments: 0 | edit

I am 62, not an economist or a politician thank god, but I am a businessman and have worked for the past 45 years in four different careers. From a cartographer in the public sector for the first 4 years, then as a parts manager in a garage for 3 years, then as a salesman to managing director for an automotive aftermarket specialist that I helped build into the market leader in a 20 year career, latterly I have worked for 18 years as an independent trainer and management consultant.

I consider myself reasonably intelligent, but more street wise than academically so. I write a bit but read a lot more. I might not be as qualified as some to comment on the situation in Europe at the moment, but think there are one or two points that those eurocrats in all their blind ambitions have missed.

The point I am coming to is that in joining all 17 of the EU's euro zone countries together under one set currency doesn't allow for adjustments to be made for successful verses unsuccessful economies.

Take the example of Greece verses Germany, one has the most successful economy in Europe the other country has one of the worst performing economy's.  I am not going to cover the reasons why as that is not my remit here. In the good old days the drachma would have been devalued several times now and when compared to the deutschmark, which in the same time would have been revalued in the opposite direction. There would be several drachmas to the deutschmark.

Under the present system one Euro in Greece is the same value as one Euro in Germany, how can that be right? It might have been ok for a few months even possible to cover the discrepancies up for a few years as they did. But most (not all) of the problems with the Euro in Europe today is just this point. There is no working mechanism for adjustments to be made.

The EU has 27 different countries whose economies are working at different rates with different results. The Euro zone has 17 and either it all has to become one country (which is the Eurocrats secret agenda) or there should be a two or better a three tier system to allow for these differences to take place.

Business World News Asian stocks fall on Europe crisis pessimism

Posted: Dec 08, 2011 |Comments: 0 | edit

:
Date December 08 , 2011
Asian stocks fell as hopes faded that a bold solution might be found to a crippling debt crisis.

Asian stocks fell Thursday as hopes faded that a bold solution might be found to a crippling debt crisis that is threatening to drag Europe into a deep recession.

Benchmark oil rose above $100 per barrel while the dollar fell against the euro and the yen.

Japan s Nikkei 225 fell 0.6 percent to 8,670.82, dragged down by weaker-than-expected machinery orders. South Korea s Kospi lost 0.3 percent to 1,913.69 and Hong Kong s Hang Seng shed 0.7 percent to 19,111.64.

Australia s S&P/ASX 200 dropped 0.2 percent to 4,286. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan and India also fell. Mainland China and Malaysia rose.

One point of friction has surfaced over a proposal by French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German chancellor Angela Merkel, leaders of the two economic powerhouses among the 17 nations that use the euro. They are demanding far-reaching changes to the treaty governing the European Union to enforce fiscal discipline among its members.

That proposal is being met with resistance by the European Council, an institution that defines the priorities of the entire 27-nation EU. Its president, Herman Van Rompuy, favors going a simpler route amending existing rules that apply to the 17 euro countries to avoid the trickier step of requiring every country to approve the new treaty.
The disagreement has soured hopes for an immediate solution to the crisis.

"Normally this kind of talk would take place behind closed doors. The fact that it s in the open suggests it already has and normal channels have, at least temporarily, broken down," analysts at DBS Bank Ltd. said in a research note.

Additionally, certain provisions in the Franco-German proposal, such as setting automatic penalties for countries that overspend, are controversial and have the potential to delay an agreement.

Urgency was added to the situation Wednesday when ratings agency Standard & Poor s threatened to downgrade the bonds of all EU countries because their economies were intricately linked with the 17 nations that use the euro.

The intensifying debt crisis and lack of radical solution such as the issuance of eurobonds have roiled global stocks for months. Germany has resisted eurobonds due to fears that pooling debt would drive up its own borrowing costs, expose its taxpayers to the bad debt of weaker countries, and remove incentives for struggling nations to get their finances in order.

"Germany and the rest of Europe are going into two directions. The rest of Europe wants Germany to stand behind the euro but Germany does not want to be the lender of last resort," said Francis Lun, managing director of Lyncean Holdings in Hong Kong. "Because it ... will be the German taxpayer to foot the bill and I don t think that s what Germany wants."

Asian shares faced multiple headwinds. Australia unexpectedly eliminated 6,300 jobs in November. Most economists had predicted total employment would rise by 10,000.

Meanwhile, Japan s core private-sector machinery orders fell a seasonally adjusted 6.9 percent in October, the second consecutive month of decline. Financial markets had expected a 0.5 percent increase, Kyodo News Agency reported. That hurt industrial shares such as Nippon Steel, which lost 1 percent, and industrial supplier Mitsui & Co., down 1.5 percent.

Tokyo Electric Power, operator of the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant, plunged 7.6 percent after a news report said the government is set to effectively nationalize the utility.

Samsung Electronics rose 2 percent, as Citigroup Global Markets rated its stock "a buy," saying it was expected to be the only profitable major display panel maker in the fourth quarter of 2011.

On Wall Street, the Dow rose 0.4 percent to close at 12,196.37. The Standard & Poor s 500 index rose 0.2 percent at 1,261.01. The Nasdaq composite index fell marginally to 2,649.21.

Benchmark oil for January delivery was up 13 cents to $100.62 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 79 cents to end at $100.49 per barrel on the Nymex on Wednesday.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.3404 from $1.3394 late Wednesday in New York. The dollar fell slightly to 77.64 yen from 77.66 yen.

Sovereign Debt Problems – United States or Europe, Who Is Worse Off?

Posted: Jan 20, 2012 |Comments: 0 | edit

Recently Standard and Poor's downgraded 9 European Countries including the number two EU member France. For now, it seems the number one EU economy Germany is off the hook. There are six Euro-zone Countries that currently have equal or greater debt to GDP ratios than the United States. Greece and Italy currently have higher GDP ratios while Ireland and Portugal are just about the same as the US. Currently the United States is at 100% Debt to GDP.

A big problem for America is that the financial analysts who do all the reporting on the United States debt and calculate all the financial data, only look at parts of the fiscal equation to render their reports. They mostly only factor in debt where the US borrowed money, where the Federal Government has sold Treasury Bonds. Financial analysts don't factor in other important government debts or obligations. Such as $6 trillion in loan obligations from Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac, which are guaranteed by the Government. Or over $1 trillion in student loans again guaranteed by the Federal Government. The US is required to pay on these loans in the case of default.

The reality right now is that more and more student loans and home mortgages are being defaulted on every day. But none of this debt is included in the National Debt or GDP numbers. Then there is Social Security & Medicare obligations which again are not factored in. This is real debt that amounts to an additional $3 trillion plus dollars. Then as a Nation no one factors in the debt created from individual states that the Government is obligated to pay for. If all these factors were included in the real numbers used to arrive at the US Debt & GDP, the United States would actually be worse off financially with a higher debt to GDP ratio than Greece, which is the Euro-zone's highest indebted country.

What is currently happening today due to the weakness in the euro, is giving strength to the dollar (under the wrong conditions). People in masses are dumping the euro and buying dollars as a safe haven asset. This allows the interest rates to be very low for the US Government to borrow more money. This creates an illusion that the US economy is in better fiscal condition than the economies of Europe.
