Finally some good news about the American economy

Posted: Feb 15, 2012 |Comments: 0 | edit

Cranes clutter the skyline along northern Virginia is busy carapace. On Friday evening, holiday shoppers thronged Northpark centre more in Dallas Texas buying Lego and luxury soap. Tables in the better restaurants on the west side of Los Angeles can be booked without Hollywood connections. In places, America shows clear signs of returning to a kind of economic normality.

Not long ago, a double dip into recession seemed possible. On November 22 bureau of economic analysis revised its estimate for GDP growth in the third quarter down, though still to 2% annual rate, from the earlier reported 2.5%. According to another measure of output, gross domestic income, growth was only barely positive in the second and third quarters of the year. Yet an improved outlook for release in the future is now showing up all over the economics.

America's trade deficit declined the third month running in September, thanks to rising exports. Industrial production rose strongly in October. Mortgage delinquencies in foreclosures continue to kick down. The microphone occupied homes remains weak, but construction of multi-family residential units which are attractive to renters may end the year over 50% from 2010. Residential building improvements are touching record highs.

In these improved economic conditions are helping to boost confidence. University of Michigan's index of consumer sentiment has risen sharply since August. In October, growth in personal incomes accelerated. Consumers are feeling quite a bit perkier. Car sales in October to their highest level since February and are projected to recover to pre-financial crisis levels in November. Retail sales were up more than 7% in October from a year before.

the key question has long been whether growth will translate into new jobs. The signs are encouraging; payroll employment growth has accelerated from early summer, and initial claims of joblessness benefits are dropping. All told, gross domestic product is forecast to rise more than 3% per year in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, inflation is dropping. A less federal reserve with more room to focus on employment side of its mandate.

Yet the recent good news may be but a brief break in the clouds. The legislative battle over America's finances, which contributed to America some sort of, is raging again. If Congress fails to extend key stimulative measures, it may settle a vulnerable economy with fiscal drag of more than two percentage points of growth.

QE 3 Is On Its Way - Make No Mistake About It!

ByTom Genot

Expert Author Tom Genot

First, the ECB steadily has been giving into monetizing the majority of Europe's debt. Next, The Bank of England recently passed a measure to monetize an additional 75 billion British pounds. They expect this will help ease their problems but of course it will only make matters worse. The latest comments have been coming in from Helicopter Ben's own minions. Fed Governor Dan Tarullo recently gave this statement. "I believe we should move back up towards the top of the list of options and implement large-scale purchases of additional Mortgage Backed Securities."

Anymore actions or comments such as these, should not be a surprise to anyone anymore. But rather seen as par for the course. In the US, news regarding the Fed ready to start buying up large-scale mortgages to me certainly is a clear signal QE 3 is just around the corner. It seems that Mr. Tarullo's comments are in complete agreement with his boss's (Ben Bernanke) own views. Both are under the mindset that the root causes for the current economic conditions are due to high interest rates.

The reality however is that the interest rates have never been lower and allowing inflation to escalate will not repair the economy nor raise the standards of living for the majority of Americans. This is simply going to continue eating away at savings and generate additional imbalances within the economy. Personal debt levels being too high and high rates of unemployment are reasons consumers these days are not able to buy houses along with home prices still being out of line with average incomes.

The Fed is trying to manipulate us every way possible. One plan is for the Fed to manipulate you into thinking inflation is right around the corner. Within the Fed's arsenal you have real bullets such as QE 3 and once those bullets run out they will start using imaginary bullets such as manipulating expectations. The more the Fed continues down this path the closer we will reach the point where the dollars confidence becomes lost and the total collapse of the dollar begins.

Make no mistake, the Fed is pursuing the dollars destruction and interest rates will rise relentlessly as inflation takes a stronger hold on the economy while wiping out whatever genuine growth is still left in the economy. With this crisis so near to implementation it is best everyone be prepared before it strikes. Owning physical gold and silver are two of the best ways to protect your assets and purchasing power during a major inflationary event and the eventual destruction of paper money.

Yeah, But What About Jobs?

ByEthan Nobles

Expert Author Ethan Nobles

For the past couple of years, we've heard about a housing market recovery, government programs designed to encourage a recovery, federal plans to help people avoid foreclosure, etc.

It's worth mentioning, however, that low interest rates and dropping prices are great but falling unemployment rates would be even better. The truth of the matter is that people tend to not buy major things like houses if they're not working. People without jobs tend to fall behind on their mortgages, too.

A lot of the economic news we're inundated with tends to overlook one very important truth - perhaps the largest economic indicator is the unemployment rate. When we see that fall to tolerable levels, we'll know that the economy is on the mend and everything from the housing market to the automotive industry will likely post greatly improved numbers.

Yes, it really is as simple as that.

Nationally, the unemployment news in August was somewhat encouraging. The national unemployment rate was 9.1 percent in August - down from 9.6 percent in the same month last year. The unemployment rate from July to August was flat at 9.1 percent.

In Arkansas, the news was a bit more mixed. The unemployment rate in August was lower than the national rate at 8.3 percent, but up from 7.8 percent a year ago and up from 8.2 percent in July. In real numbers, 112,000 Arkansans were unemployed in August and that's up from 105,000 in the same month last year.

Fortunately, there were 1.24 million Arkansans working in August. It seems that enough of them were secure in their jobs and future prospects to push homes sales up almost 20 percent in August. Yes, those were people who were able to pick up a great deal or two by taking advantage of dropping home prices and interest rates that are hovering around record lows.

Should the improved sales come as a surprise? Not really as some pretty basic market dynamics were in place - sales do increase when the price of an item for sale drops. It is significant to point out that the market is floating along - and hopefully improving - without any atypical government stimulus programs encouraging people to purchase houses.

That's good news for the housing industry. In spite of unemployment rates that are in need of improvement, market conditions were such that the number of homes sold improved in August. Hopefully, we'll see sales continue to improve and stabilize for long enough that home values will start to increase, too. This market is great if one happens to be a buyer, and the pendulum will swing back to when the advantage rests with the seller in the future.

Still, how much more and how much quicker would the housing industry and other sectors of the economy improve if unemployment numbers fell? When people talk about the economy, finding ways to put more Americans to work should always be part of the conversation.

Home Sweet Home is written by Ethan C. Nobles and is sent weekly to publications throughout the Natural State on behalf of the Mortgage Bankers Association of Arkansas.
