Dick Armey: Tea Party Vote Not a Lock for Perry or Anyone
Even so, Armey warns that social activists in the Tea Party have serious reservations about some of Perry's actions.
Perry has the same thing going for him that Armey thinks any GOP nominee has going for them: "He's not Obama."
Armey says the Tea Party is afraid of what he calls "Obama's incompetence" and they "thank the Lord he is too incompetent to do what he would like to do."
As for rising speculation former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin may join the race, that thought intrigues Armey. He will be looking to see if Palin has a broader appeal than the current crop of candidates.

Enter the Dragon
Bruce Lee called it the art of fighting without fighting.
Lee died in 1973, after the filming "." It was first martial arts movie to become a major motion picture. It forever bestowed Lee with a special, posthumous status in the martial arts and entertainment world.
There's a pivotal scene in "" where Lee and others are sailing to a martial arts tournament. Lee was small, only 5"7" and about 135 pounds. But he was all muscle and lightning fast. In the film, a strapping bully is shoving deck hands around the boat, challenging them to fight. Each declines. Finally the goon gets to Lee and asks him his "style" of combat. Lee informs the man it's the way of "fighting without fighting." The man insists that Lee demonstrate some of his moves. Lee thinks about it for a moment and suggests they board a skiff tied up alongside the larger vessel. Lee points out there's an island in the distance and they can sail to on the skiff and spar on the beach.
After some consternation, the man agrees and climbs into the skiff. And then Lee lets out the tow line attached to the smaller craft. It sends the ruffian floating out to sea.
Fighting without fighting.

Romney Campaigns in New Hampshire as GOP Spotlight Shifts to Iowa
GOP candidates have repeatedly questioned the president's economic decisions, and Romney has not been shy about trumpeting his success in the business world. This morning the governor noted that three years into Mr. Obama's administration the unemployment rate is still above 9 percent, adding, "the president is out of his depth when it comes to his understanding of the private sector."
During his 2008 presidential bid Mitt Romney invested $1 million to win the Iowa Straw Poll, but ultimately that failed to translate into enough support to win the Caucus. This time his campaign decided not to participate, but the victor could see a bump in poll numbers. Michele Bachmann is spending a considerable amount of time in Iowa, hoping her conservative message resonates with voters. Romney has largely ignored the Hawkeye State, believing strong showings in the early primary states will pave the way to the White House. However, later this week he'll attend the annual Iowa State Fair and is also scheduled to participate in Thursday's Fox News/Washington Examiner debate in Ames.

VIDEO: Meet Gary Johnson - The First and “Least Known” 2012 Candidate
Johnson argues that once you get to know him, you'll like him.
So, in an attempt to introduce Johnson. Here are some highlights:
•He is for gay marriage and believes the government should "get out of the marriage business"
•He "supports a women's right to choose" when it comes to abortion
•He won't be signing pledges on social issues like the Susan B Anthony List Pro-life Pledge or Bob Vander Plaats's Iowa pledge
•He says signing the Cut, Cap and Balance pledge was an "easy decision"
Johnson's strategy for getting known lies in the First-in-the-Nation Primary state.
Johnson says, "It's about New Hampshire, and it's about going out and meeting a whole bunch of people in New Hampshire, which by the way is a great political environment. New Hampshirites really take it as a responsibility to go and meet and talk and discuss the issues with all the candidates."

Obama's Mission to Mars... Or Something Short of It
The president's mission to Mars idea isn't new-- he unveiled it last year-- but the timing of the Twitter question couldn't be more relevant.
"Now that the space shuttle is gone, where does America stand in space exploration?" the president was asked.
The president said he's been urging NASA to re-think its way of doing things.
"We're still using the same models for space travel that we used with the Apollo program 30, 40 years ago. And so what we've said is, rather than keep on doing the same thing, let's invest in basic research around new technologies that can get us places faster, allow human space flight to last longer," he said.
The future of low-orbit space travel is expected to fall to private companies and U.S. astronauts may have to hitch a ride on Russian capsules, but those ventures have become routine, Mr. Obama said, and he urged NASA to broaden its horizons.
Still, the president indicated it's important not to underestimate America's stature in the final frontier, telling the town hall, "We are still a leader in space exploration."

While Rick Perry Rests, Presidential Talk Ramps Up
White House Senior Advisor says 'We're in the Danger Zone' on the Debt Ceiling Deadline
Obama Sends off Gates with Presidential Medal of Freedom
Speaking in front of a number of active and retired military and civilian leaders, Obama turned to Gates and said, "this was not part of the program," before he announced the award.
Gates was noticeably surprised by the honor and when he stood to receive it he quipped, "We should all know by now you're getting pretty good at this covert ops stuff," -- a reference to the now infamous Bin Laden raid.
Obama recognized Gates for his unique service under two presidents, Democratic and Republican, while the nation was in the midst of two wars. He encouraged the rest of Washington to take note of the selfless manner in which Gates served, putting politics aside and his "nation first."
Obama thanked Gates for his 40 years in government and called him one the nation's finest public servants.
Among the many people Gates recognized for their contributions through his tenure, he saved the most important for last. He thanked his wife Becky for standing by his side since they met on a blind date 45 years ago in Bloomington, Indiana.
Secretary Gates and his wife will fly to their home in Washington state Thursday afternoon with a normal military escort and full communications. He will remain in the military's top civilian position until Leon Panetta is sworn in as the 23rd Secretary of Defense at 9:00 a.m. Friday in the Pentagon.
Gates has served in his role as secretary since December 18th, 2006 and will be the 4th longest serving defense secretary behind Robert McNamara, Caspar Weinberger and Donald H. Rumsfeld.

Carney Tells Reporters They Shouldn’t be so Greedy in Their Questioning
During the approximately 65 minute news conference Tuesday, eight of the 10 questions included follow-ups, and only one question could really be considered a single question.
Some follow-ups were more extreme than others.
Chuck Todd of NBC, asked a question on the Constitutionality of not just the War Powers Resolution, but also the debt ceiling and gay marriage. He could accurately be described as trying to get his money's worth, because statistically it contained the most follow-ups and Obama spent about nine minutes answering.
As the second question of the news conference, it could have set the tone.
"Chuck's not here to defend himself!" shouted Fox News' Mike Emanuel to a chorus of laughter.

Dems Warn of "No" Vote On Debt Ceiling if Revenue Not Included
When asked if they were prepared to vote against any measure that does not contain provisions that bring more revenue into the federal government for deficit reduction, like closing tax loopholes and eliminating subsidies for certain industries, Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., warned, "There are those of us who will have difficulty in supporting a debt ceiling increase without revenue, and when I talk about revenue - ending these tax loopholes and tax breaks that companies in America are getting at the expense of the American taxpayer."
Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., went even further. The number three Democrat, in reacting to a question about an insistence by House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, that the votes do not exist in his conference for any package with tax increases, blasted, "He doesn't have the votes if he doesn't have revenues, because he's not going to get Democratic votes without revenues and he doesn't have enough Republican votes to pass it."
Armed with a recent vote, supported by 34 Republicans, including GOP Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, ending ethanol-blending subsidies and using the revenue for deficit reduction, Democrats said this should open the door to a compromise "to ensure that the sacrifice is shared."
Republicans balked.
McConnell has said that these matters should be dealt with later in the context of overall tax code reform, a problem far too complex to solve in the ongoing debt talks.
A senior Senate GOP leadership aide also scoffed at the amount on which Democrats are focused, noting that ending ethanol subsidies only brings in roughly $2 billion annually. Ending taxpayer subsidies for corporations using commercial jets, another Democratic target, would bring in another $3 billion over the next decade.
Schumer refused to say how much revenue Democrats are seeking in closed-door talks with the president.
Lawmakers are fast-approaching the August 2 deadline after which the U.S. Is expected to start defaulting on its debt, according to the Treasury Department.
It is unclear if an agreement can be reached in time, as any agreement will need to be written into legislative language and analyzed and scored by the nonpartisan number-crunchers at the Congressional Budget Office.

Breaking Down Obama's News Conference
"Right now, congress can send me a bill that would make it easier for entrepreneurs to patent a new product or idea because we can't give innovators in other countries a big leg up when it comes to opening new business' and creating new jobs," said Mr. Obama of the steps congress can take to boost job growth.
The news conference was dominated with questions about the debt ceiling, with reporters from every TV network called on except CBS. Topics ranges from Libya and Afghanistan to gay rights and immigration.
Here's the full list of reporters broken down by question topics and length:
Ben Feller of Associated Press kicked off the press conference with the first question on the debt ceiling, asking president Obama if he would insist the deal has to include tax increases. The President spent over five minutes responding about the debt negotiations in Washington.
Chuck Todd of NBC was called on second, asking a three part question about the war powers act being constitutional and how it relates to Libya, if the debt limit is also constitutional and a gay rights question, if the president believes marriage is a civil right. Mr. Obama took almost nine minutes to answer.
The third reporter to ask a question of president Obama was Julianna Goldman from Bloomberg TV. The financial reporter threw him a question on regulation in job growth, citing the NLRB complaint against Boeing. The president spoke on the topic answering Goldman's topic for approximately six minutes.
Mark Lander of the New York Times asked the president about the military procedures for capturing versus killing of terrorists. Obama answered his question in the shortest amount of time, less than three minutes.
The fifth reporter to get a question to president Obama Wednesday was Fox News' own Mike Emanuel, the newly appointed Chief Congressional Correspondent. Emanuel asked Mr. Obama about not using the word ‘victory' in his Afghanistan speech last week. Obama answered for four and a half minutes, including a follow-up question about the attack Tuesday on the Intercontinental hotel in Kabul.
This was Emanuel's fourth time asking president Obama a question in a White House news conference. He most recently questioned the commander in chief about jobs after the budget passed in March. In December Emanuel threw Obama a question about closing Guantanamo Bay. And after the midterm elections in November, he questioned the president's concern of the republican majority in the house of representatives possibly repealing his health care legislation.
ABC correspondent Jim Sciutto was called on sixth in the East Room. Sciutto asked the president about the proposal by Senators McCain and Kerry for leeway in Libya. The president responded for three and a half minutes saying how important the bipartisan support of coming together to prevent the Qaddafi regime from massacring Libyan civilians.
The Wall Street Journal's Laura Meckler landed the seventh's question to president Obama and threw him a two part inquiry on gay marriage and the deficit talks. The president answered her in a little over three minutes.
The eighth reporter called on was Antonieta Cadiz from La Opinion, the only member of the foreign press who got a question in today's news conference. She asked the president if he would veto a mandatory E-verify bill if he was planning to replace ATF leadership after the recent guns operation to Mexico. He spent over three minutes answering her question saying the investigation was ongoing and we need comprehensive immigration reform.
The newest member of the White House press corp, CNN's Senior White House Correspondent, Jessica Yellin was called on ninth, asking if the August 2nd deadline for the debt ceiling is a final deadline. Obama spent almost nine minutes talking about the importance of the US government paying its bills.
The final question of the news conference was asked by Reuters reporter, Caren Bohan. She asked the president if he was worried about the payroll tax holiday impacting long term deficit reduction. Mr. Obama wrapped things up saying, "the American people need to know we're focused on jobs and not just deficit reduction."

Bachmann Looks to Carry Iowa Momentum to New Hampshire
In front of a crowd of about 200 people Bachmann led the crowd in a chant of "Live Free or Die," the state motto of New Hampshire, before launching into "Barack Obama is a one term president."
Despite recent bumps in the campaign trail, Bachmann appeared poised and confident under blue skies and a hot summer sun, playfully noting the lack of teleprompters and saying when she's president they'll be banned from the White House - a dig at President Obama who constantly relies on them to deliver speeches.
Playing to her Tea Party roots, she regaled the faithful with tales of runaway spending on Capitol Hill, telling a story about the House of Representatives voting for foreign aid to help cats and dogs and noting other cases of wasteful spending at a time the American economy was collapsing.
The latest polls in Iowa show her in a statistical dead heat with front runner Mitt Romney. But while Bachmann was announcing her campaign in Waterloo, Iowa yesterday Romney was campaigning in New Hampshire where he has a commanding double digit lead.
"I think she's a very strong contender," said Romney, adding "she's an excellent candidate, she's getting her message across and receiving good support. I have nothing but respect for her."
Whether the conservative message driving her poll numbers in the Hawkeye state will translate to support in the Granite State remains to be seen. Today's Boston Herald had a front page banner headline reading 'Move Over Sarah' calling Bachmann the Tea Party's 'new star.'
She's no stranger in New Hampshire having participated in the recent GOP debate, but that event competed against the 6th game of the Boston Bruins Stanley Cup campaign and most voters were tuned into hockey and not politics.
"She's doing better here than she was prior to the debate," said Andy Smith, Director of the University of New Hampshire Survey Center, "but Romney is still the clear frontrunner."

Obama Troop Cuts Went Beyond Largest Withdrawal Offered By Top General
The admission came during questioning from Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., during Allen's nomination hearing in front of the Senate Armed Services committee.
GRAHAM: The option that the country has chosen through President Obama is to withdraw 10,000 this year, all surge forces gone by September. Is it fair to say, General Allen, that was not one of the options presented to the president by General Petraeus?
ALLEN: It is a more aggressive option than that which was presented.
GRAHAM: My question is, was that a option?
ALLEN: It was not.
GRAHAM: So I just want the country to understand that this is not the Petraeus strategy any longer. The commander in chief has the perfect right to do what he did. I just hope that it hasn't undercut what I think could be a very successful outcome.
Like Allen -- General Petraeus and Adm. Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, both testified to Congress last week that the President's plan was "more aggressive" than they had anticipated, but were very careful not to reveal the personal advice they offered the president leading up to his decision.
Senator Graham and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., both of whom sit on the armed services committee, were critical of the new timeline announced by the White House last week. McCain told Gen. Allen his job in Afghanistan will be more challenging based on this drawdown.
"I hope I'm wrong," McCain said, but "I'm very concerned the President's decision poses unnecessary risk."
Graham said it's important to make sure the politicians who make decisions that affect the war are held accountable. "If it turns out well, we get the credit. If we've done some things to undermine the effort, then people will notice where the blame lies."

Plagued by Gaffes and Scrutiny, Bachmann Emphasizes Campaign Message
The fact is, as host George Stephanopoulos pointed out, John Quincy Adams was not a Founding Father; rather, he was the son of one and the sixth president of the U.S.
Pressed by NBC's Matt Lauer, Bachmann said being interrogated like this by journalists is her understanding of what it means to be "Palinized," a term that entered the political vocabulary in the wake of former Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin's portrayal in the media during the presidential campaign of 2008.
"Well I think that means that there--that there will be a media onslaught of attack," she said. "But that's nothing new, that's something that goes with the territory. It doesn't matter who the candidate is. Whether they're male or female, there will be attacks that come, and that's simply what we have to be prepared to deal with, and I'm prepared."
