President Obama to Make First Trip to Iowa of the Year

President Obama will be making his first stop of the year to Iowa next Tuesday, the state that helped secure a crucial early win in his bid for the White House.

He'll be making speaking at Alcoa Davenport Works Factory in Bettendorf, continuing his message of the importance of manufacturing in the economy. While he may make some key statements on the status of job creation, President Obama is also working to shore up votes in the Midwest as he re-election campaign moves into full swing. The president doesn't have a primary challenger, so the importance of Iowa as the first caucus state is a bit diminished, but in the general election every state counts.

The last time the president was in Iowa was in September when he was on a backyard listening tour about health care and other topics. Michelle Obama just made her first visit there in her current role earlier this spring when she gave a commencement address.

For the president, Iowa has extra significance because it jump-started his 2008 campaign when many observers at the time expected then Sen. Hillary Clinton to win the Hawkeye state.

Iowa will host a couple other notable political events next week too.

Republican presidential contender, Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., will formally announce her presidential campaign Monday in the town where she was born, Waterloo. On top of that, a documentary movie about Sarah Palin, "The Undefeated" debuts in the small town of Pella at the Pella Opera House. While Palin is not associated with the film directly, it will likely satiate her fans with the spotlight, and continue to keep her in the news as the political world awaits her final announcement about her decision on running for president.

Some key polls are coming up that will gauge what Iowans are thinking of the current crop of candidates. The Des Moines Register will release its data this weekend on GOP contenders. And in about six weeks is the Iowa Straw Poll at the State Fair, an unofficial barometer and kick-off for the state ahead of the caucuses next winter.

One Republican candidate, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, has notably decided to skip the Iowa caucuses, but will still be a part of the debate line-up there.

Note: Fox News, the Washington Examiner and the Iowa Republican Party will host a debate from Iowa on August 11.

President Obama to Court Gay Vote and Money as Marriage Issue Looms

his President is very supportive of and strong on LGBT rights and his record is significant with regard to that. He's been very clear about his position on gay marriage. He has been very clear about how that position is evolving. I don't have any new announcement to make. But I think you know his record, and he's proud of it," Carney said on Monday.Recent polls narrowly show that the nation is warming up to the idea of gay marriage, with a slim majority supporting it.

Next week President Obama will also host a gay pride event at the White House.

Lagging Public Opinion not a Factor in Obama Afghanistan Decision

he number of U.S. troops in harm's way in Iraq and Afghanistan is already reduced by several tens of thousands and will be even more dramatically reduced by the end of this year."

And by the end of next summer, significantly more troops will be back at home bases in Europe and the United States.

Oops: White House Corrects Job Creation “Laughter” Line in Transcript

, " the release stated.

The Drudge Report, a news website with reads in the tens of millions, picked up on the error and had the headline up at the top of the site for a large portion of the day.

It's of course a small mistake, and minor in the scale of what the administration deals with, but no White House wants to be late-night-joke ready when trying to stay on message that the president is working hard on creating jobs.

Will the Government Regulate Heart-clogging Foods Too?

The FDA says cigarette manufacturers must start including graphic pictures on every pack showing the effects of smoking in an effort to get people to quit and lead healthier lives. Could the same type of pictures soon be gracing the labels of bacon, fried chicken and other heart-clogging foods?

Plenty of people out there oppose the kind of regulation that they say, infringes upon the right of individuals to decide what's best for them without government intervention. On behalf of those people, reporters asked Health and Human Services Sec. Kathleen Sebelius Tuesday if her "perfect world" includes "graphic images of clogged arteries and fat-encrusted hearts on really bad food."

"I think tobacco is unique. It is a product that is the number one cause of preventable death," Sebelius said.

But obesity ranks high as a cause too. According to reports in 2009, obesity caused about half as many preventable deaths as smoking. High blood pressure, salt intake and trans fat consumption were counted separately on top of obesity.

Romney and Huntsman: Separated at Birth?

One's a handsome 50-something former governor with a large, attractive Mormon family, moderate conservative views, and a pesky connection to the Obama administration to combat.

The other's a handsome 60-something former governor with a large, attractive Mormon family, moderate conservative views, and a pesky connection to the Obama administration to combat.

And both are running for president.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman are candidates in a growing field of contenders for the 2012 GOP nomination, but they may have more of a challenge convincing voters they aren't political twins separated at birth than edging out other hopefuls with their campaign platforms and promises.

Huntsman's profile reads like that of the quintessential American politician. Born in 1960, Huntsman was a boy scout who grew up to serve as an Asian affairs emissary for the Reagan, Bush 41 and Bush 43 administrations. He became the governor of Utah in 2005, an office to which he was reelected in a landslide before resigning in August, 2009 to accept an appointment as Ambassador to China for President Obama.

It's that last title that may be a sticking point for Huntsman to overcome in the minds of Republican voters. Huntsman said in his candidacy announcement Tuesday morning that he respects Obama and hopes to lead a civil opposing campaign.

White House Won't Say if War Powers Resolution is Constitutional

e are not making a judgment on the constitutionality of the War Powers Act with this reasoning: We are simply stating that the War Powers Resolution does not need to be involved because the hostilities clause of that resolution," Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters, "is not met."

The constitutionality of the War Powers Resolution has been in question since it was first passed in 1973. The charge that it overstepped the authority of the commander-in-chief was the very reason President Richard Nixon vetoed it (before a two-thirds majority in the House and Senate overturned the veto).

In fact, every president since Nixon has taken the position that the War Powers Resolution is unconstitutional. But those same administrations have also abided by it, working within the act's framework to avoid a battle with congressional leaders.

Mr. Obama has chosen not to follow in the footsteps of his predecessors. Instead, he is choosing to take another route and say it doesn't even apply to the mission in Libya. The reasoning behind that decision is up for debate.

And so is the legal argument over whether or not this conflict is covered by the War Powers.

"For me to get up and tell you that by some miracle, every lawyer in this administration was in agreement on that issue, you wouldn't believe me, because it's simply been too contentious for now 38 years," Carney said. "

Weiner to Formally Resign Tuesday

Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y. has penned a letter to New York Secretary of State Cesar Perales and Governor Andrew Cuomo resigning his congressional seat at the end of Tuesday.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., are CC'd on the letter and it is expected to be read on the House Floor Tuesday, making the resignation effective.

The letter is short and makes no mention of the Twitter photo scandal that led to his resignation.

"I hereby resign as the member of the House of Representatives for New York's Ninth Congressional District effective at midnight Tuesday, June 21, 2011," the letter reads. "It has been an honor to serve the people of Queens and Brooklyn."

Once Weiner's resignation becomes official, the House will have 432 occupied seats with 240 Republicans and 192 Democrats. Aside from the vacancy Weiner's resignation creates, the seats formerly held by Rep. Jane Harmon, D-Calif., and now Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., are also open.

New York will hold a special election to fill the seat Weiner is vacating and similar elections are also planned for the other two empty congressional seats.

Republicans Laissez Bon Temps Rouler at Republican Leadership Conference

GOP White House hopefuls served up spicy New Orleans attacks on the left and the incumbent president at the Republican Leadership Conference.

To President Obama and all the Liberals in Washington, D.C.," Herman Cain told the cheering crowd, "the U.S. is not going to become the United States of Europe. Not on our watch and not in the presidency of Herman Cain!"

The latest Gallup poll shows 44 percent of voters are likely to vote for whomever ends up becoming the Republican Party candidate in 2012. That compares to just 39 percent who would vote to reelect President Obama.

Congressman Ron Paul declared, "I have great news for the cause of liberty. It's coming our way!"

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich showed that despite last week's stunning staff walkout, he can rip President Obama with best of them.

"He is a natural, secular, European socialist. He believes in big government, he believes in centralized power, he believes he as a politician knows more than we do and he should help us redesign our lives by letting him and his bureaucrats live it for us!"

Former Utah Governor John Huntsman cancelled his scheduled appearance because of a head cold.

Michigan Congressman Thaddeus McCotter, with hands held out like weighing scales, defined for the enthusiastic crowd the difference between the GOP and the Democratic Party.

"You can have prosperity, or you can have poverty. You can have duty, or you can have indulgence. You can have exceptionalism, or you can have declinism."

Former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson received only scattered applause for pushing his signature issue.

"I espouse legalizing marijuana. Legalize marijuana and arguably 75 percent of the border violence with Mexico goes away."

Gaining steam since her New Hampshire debate debut, Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachman repeatedly drew applause from the crowd.

"Mr. President you don't win war on terror by closing Guantanamo Bay," she said. "You don't win the war on terror by reading Miranda rights to foreign terrorists. And by the way, Miranda rights are not for foreign terrorists!"

Rick Santorum had the tough job of following Bachman's well-appreciated speech.

"We need government to protect life and liberty as a foundation of this country."

Rick Perry, who's seriously considering a presidential run, is scheduled to speak Saturday after results of a straw poll are announced. He will not be included in that poll because he has not decided whether to run, despite getting much encouragement to do so.

White House Battles Big Business Gripes About Regulations

during his days as secretary of Commerce, and we look forward to working with him again on policies that will move our country forward - especially on job creation, economic growth and global competitiveness."

The administration has been touting the flourishing manufacturing sector as a promising arena for much-needed jobs. Perhaps it's that growing confidence that led executives to speak out.

When asked about the myriad of complaints from industry leaders that Daley faced, Carney agreed that there's no denying many are legit, "And you have to understand that he went in there with no prior knowledge about the cases that were put before him, but obviously the ones that sounded bad he thought sounded bad. And he said so. "

Weiner: Going, Going, But Not Gone

The Congressional barometric pressure gauge indicated a news storm was brewing early Thursday morning.

House Democratic leaders planned a closed door meeting to discuss stripping Weiner of his committee assignment. Multiple sources indicated that this was really an effort to apply pressure on Weiner to resign. Weiner holds a seat on the coveted Energy and Commerce Committee. And a lawmaker without a Congressional committee is like person without a country.

The Capitol buzzed with rumors that Weiner was about to resign. Everyone on Capitol Hill wanted to talk about Anthony Weiner. Except for those reporters hoped would talk about Weiner.

House Republicans promptly started a press conference about job creation at 9:30. But no one wanted to listen to that.

"Speaker Boehner, has Congressman Weiner put in his resignation?" asked CNN's Deirdre Walsh as soon as GOP lawmakers concluded their opening remarks.

"No," came a terse reply from Boehner, anxious to move on to a different topic.

"Are you aware he might resign from Congress?" continued Walsh.

"No," answered Boehner. "When I become aware of it, I'll let you know about it."

A cacophony of questions showered in about Weiner. So Boehner tried to escort the discussion back to job creation.

"It's been a distraction," Boehner continued. "The American people are asking where are the jobs. They want us to focus on job creation. And this is just a distraction that was unnecessary."

The conversation then moved to Libya.

Less than an hour later, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) tried a more direct approach during her meeting with reporters. Pelosi brought along Reps. Sander Levin (D-MI) and Mark Critz (D-PA) to discuss the economy and potentially run rhetorical interference. And the leader fired a pre-emptive strike in hopes of quashing the Weiner discussion.

"We are here to talk about jobs, about Medicare and protecting the middle class," instructed Pelosi. "If you are here to ask a question about Congressman Weiner, I won't be answering any."

But of course, the first query out of the gate for Pelosi dealt with Weiner.

"Perhaps I was unclear," Pelosi replied icily.

Obama Camp Ramps Up Hispanic Outreach as 2012 Approaches

has done more for Latinos than any other president," insists Pena. Then, Pena listed several items of note including the nomination of Justice Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court, expansion of the Pell Grant program and healthcare reform.

Missing from the list is comprehensive immigration reform. Are Hispanics disappointed President Obama's team didn't deliver on that?

"Of course," says Pena.

But Pena says what many people, including Hispanics, don't understand is that while Democrats had control in 2009 and 2010 of the White House and both houses of Congress, "we never had 60 votes" in the Senate. That's the magic number of votes required to end debate on a piece of legislation to bring it to a vote. Pena says what did get done -- like the stimulus bill and healthcare -- matter deeply to Hispanics.

Also of concern for Hispanics is the Obama administration's stepped-up enforcement of existing immigration law. Statistics from the Department of Homeland Security show deportations on the rise. In fact, deportations were at record levels in 2009 and 2010, and half of all those deported last year (392,862) were classified "non-criminal immigration violators,' meaning they were simply discovered in the U.S. without authorization.

That deeply troubles many Hispanics including Chicago Congressman Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., an outspoken advocate for comprehensive immigration reform.

Gutierrez' communications director Douglas Rivlin says immigration reform is a "threshold issue" with Latinos. While Rivlin says Hispanics do care about jobs, healthcare and education it is has been noticed "

Administration Defends Against Claims Obama is Out of Touch on the Economy

little comfort from an administration that seems more interested in deflecting the bad news than facing up to it."

White House press secretary Jay Carney disputed that claim Thursday saying president Obama "takes enormously seriously the hardship that Americans continue to endure as we emerge from the worst recession most of us have ever seen in our lifetime."

The administration has defended the recent dismal job numbers, saying the long term trend is growing with a million jobs created in the last six months and more than 2.1 million private sector jobs in the last fifteen.

Carney dismissed the ABC/Washington Post poll saying the president is focused on job creation day in and day out. "He spent so much of his time devoted to discussing the economy with his advisors, talking to outside folks about their ideas, including his Jobs and Competitiveness Council; CEOs and other leaders in the economy for their ideas about what we need to do to continue to grow the economy and create jobs."

In the NBC/Wall Street Journal survey 45% of those asked believe the economic stimulus legislation passed in 2009 will not help improve the economy. Carney says that stimulus was necessary and is yielding results. "We believe that the actions that we took in early 2009 - some of them controversial, some of them very difficult - have been responsible, or have certainly helped produce that change in direction," he said Thursday at the White House adding, "a change in direction does not mean an arrival at a destination."

The president has said many times there is more work to do, solving the federal deficit being the next important step to prevent the economy from slipping back. Carney says there is opportunity to fix the budget and grow the economy. "As we get our deficits under control, as we address our long-term debt, but that we do these things, these important things, in ways that further our potential for economic growth, increase our potential to create jobs, and do not in any way reverse the progress that we've made."

Gingrich says "Disgraceful" Obama Stimulus Joke Example of "Out of Touch" Economic Policy

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich blasted President Obama Wednesday morning for a joke about "shovel-ready" stimulus projects the president made at a jobs forum Monday.

"Every American who is unemployed-14 million-and every American whose home is currently worth less than their mortgage-one out of every four Americans-should be enraged that the President of the United States, in the middle of the ... Obama depression, is so insensitive, so uncaring that he doesn't realize the failure of his policies is causing pain to millions of human beings in this country," Gingrich said in an appearance on "Fox & Friends" Wednesday morning.

"I think it is frankly a disgraceful comment on how out of touch with reality Obama is, that he could joke about the failure of his policies," the former House speaker continued.

Gingrich's comments are some of the most forceful yet from Republicans, who for two days have railed against Obama's economic agenda, citing remarks in which the president, chuckling, admitted some stimulus projects were "not as shovel-ready as we expected."

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., echoed Gingrich's sentiment on the Senate floor Wednesday.

"I don't think the 14 million Americans who are looking for jobs right now and can't find them find any of this very funny," McConnell said.

"I don't think recent college graduates out there who are burdened with tens of thousands of dollars in student loan debt and who can't find a job are amused that the Stimulus bill turned out to be a failure," he added.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who pundits say may jump into the 2012 GOP race, weighed in at a New York Republican dinner Tuesday night, saying the president's record on stimulating the economy amounts to "abysmal leadership."

"You can parrot all you want about job creation, but it is clear that this administration considers profit to be a dirty word and they think wealth needs to be spread around, or in their reference, redistributed," Perry said.

Huntsman Creates Image Video Days Before Campaign Announcement

The work began on Jon Huntsman's image began before he even returned from his ambassadorship to China. Now the future GOP presidential candidate has a new 26 second video on his personal website to continue that image campaign.

The video shows a motocross rider zooming through what looks like the scenic backcountry of Utah. The trailer, set to music, teases with captions, "In 6 Days" and "Did not become famous with his band Wizard," hearkening back to when Huntsman briefly dropped out of high school to play keyboards in a rock band.

The rider is not Huntsman himself, but it's symbolic as the former governor of Utah has been dubbed "The Motocross Mormon" who's gunning to be the "cool uncle" in the Republican field.

The bit tags with "Paid for by Jon Huntsman" and is embedded in what's believed to be the first mass campaign e-mail from Huntsman's wife, Mary Kaye. In the message to potential supporters, she writes "Six days away -- from an incredible journey with someone completely different".

Huntsman will announce he's running for president on June 21 in New Jersey's Liberty State Park. Mary Kaye's note encourages people to sign up to show up for the announcement.

"In less than a week, a new generation of conservative leadership will emerge. No loud voices or drama, instead a vision for America that reverses the course we're on," the email reads.

Polling points to the work that's cut out for Huntsman's team on building an image and name recognition. A recent Fox News Poll among GOP Primary Voters revealed 2 percent prefer Huntsman. It was conducted June 5-7, 2011 with a margin of error of plus or minus 5.5 percent.

Report Claims White House Gave Kickback Administration Jobs to Donors

ur ethical standards are unmatched by any previous administration," Carney said at the White House press briefing. "Our efforts at transparency are unprecedented. And that's not just me saying it, it is outside groups who have said that. So I think that the fact that individuals who have been appointed also supported the President is hardly a story."

The investigation revealed that the donors, or so-called "bundlers" were able to raise $50,000 to more $500,000 for Obama's 2008 bid, and of course that the White House wants them back on board for 2012.

iWatch notes the example of Donald. H. Gips, telecom executive of Level 3 Communications LLC who gave more than half a million dollars to the Obama campaign along with two fellow execs who gave at least $150,000.

After the 2008 Obama win, Gips got the gig of hiring for the administration, and was later named the ambassador to South Africa.Level 3 also was able to nab $13.8 million in stimulus money. iWatch reports that Gips had stock in Level 3, but claimed he was completely unaware of the stimulus money.

The report also stated that some donors didn't expect anything in return, quoting a hotel CEO Stewart Bainum who got invited to the White House St. Patrick's Day party.

The iWatch investigation also concluded that 184 of 556 of the bundlers or their spouses joined the Obama administration and it bumps up even higher to 80 percent for the big-money givers. They conclude that more than half of the ambassador nominees raised more than $500,000.

Donors with connections to clean energy and telecommunications companies, which are part of the president's economic agenda, also seemed to benefit from giving cash the report says.

iWatch is part of the Center for Public Integrity, a non-profit group that looks to do investigative journalism. Their report comes on the heels of a New York Times report earlier this week that stated the president hosted Wall Street execs at the White House before he announced his re-election campaign and that the execs also happened to be big donors. Former President Bill Clinton was similarly criticized for hosting coffees with donors in the White House Map Room.

On Tuesday, Carney defended the meeting saying it was not a fundraiser and just because the president meetings with supporters to get ideas on the economy is not that ground-breaking and that the meetings are something presidents from both parties have done.

In addition to that, The HuffingtonPost obtained a memo earlier this week detailing a strategy of retaining donors by encouraging the White House to give them a sense of access and that they were being heard.

The press secretary also stated himself as an example for someone who hadn't given a lot of money, but still has a job with the administration.

In addition to getting government jobs, the iWatch report states that donors also nabbed key invites for social events and meetings at the White House. The White House visitor logs revealed 800 bundler visits and that Obama met with at least two dozen of them privately or in person, states iWatch.

Gates Goes for KO in Last Sparring Session with Senate

There was a tense exchange Wednesday between Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., and outgoing Defense Secretary Robert Gates during a Senate hearing to discuss the defense budget.

Referencing reports Pakistan arrested CIA informants that helped lead to the death of Usama bin Laden, Leahy asked Gates how long the U.S. will be willing to "support governments that lie to us?"

GATES: Well, first of all, I would say, based on 27 years in CIA and four and a half years in this job, most governments lie to each other. That's the way business gets done.

LEAHY: Do they also arrest the people that help us when they say they're allies?

GATES: Sometimes.

LEAHY: Not often.

GATES: And -- and sometimes they send people to spy on us, and they're our close allies. So...

LEAHY: And we give aid to them.

GATES: ... that's the real world that we deal with.

Pakistani sources confirmed to Fox News that five CIA informants who helped with the Bin Laden raid have been arrested in Pakistan in the last four weeks, including a doctor in the Pakistani army who provided the CIA with license plate numbers of those vehicles entering the Bin Laden compound.

These new revelations, first reported by The New York Times, have led to increased calls for Washington to cut the billions of dollars in counterterrorism funding it provides Pakistan each year.

Senator Lindsey Graham, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, suggested to reporters Wednesday the Pakistanis did far worse than to just arrest the Pakistani raid informants.

"They did more than arrest them, but I'm sure that'd come out later"

"Tell us more," a reporter shouted. "I can't," Graham responded.

In addition to expressing frustration with the Pakistanis, Sen. Leahy pushed Gates on Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who he said "can't seem to make up his mind if he's on our side or the Taliban."

In his final testimony to the Senate before retiring at the end of the month, Gates began to raise his voice and speak with more emotion about the importance of a stable Afghanistan -- and then took another swipe at Leahy.

GATES: First of all, I think the prospects of having a more stable Afghanistan in terms of a country that can defend itself -- I'm not talking about a Vermont democracy here, but a country that can defend itself.

LEAHY: Neither am I, Mr. Secretary, and you know that.

GATES: I know. But what I'm talking about is we are not in the business of nation building. What we are trying to do is build the Afghan national security forces to the point where they have the ability to defend that country and so that the Taliban and Al Qaida cannot reconstitute themselves in that country.

And I think we are making considerable headway in that respect. So I think that -- I know people are frustrated. The country's been at war for 10 years. I know people are tired. But people also have to think in terms of stability and in terms of the potential for reconstitution. What's the cost of failure?

Bachmann Hints at Path to Nomination

said is going to be tested -- if the Tea Party truly has become the infrastructure, the grassroots infrastructure of these state parties, then I think she has a path."

The congresswoman was in the Fox News DC bureau to make a television appearance on "Hannity," where she made some pointed critiques of President Obama, especially on the issue of the economy.

"We're not hearing from the president that he even begins to understand this horrific situation that a lot of Americans are in," Bachmann said. "It's very shocking, Sean, the lack of empathy that this president has. I talk to people, I care about people. I'm in my district. I've gone into restaurants for instance where restaurant owners are cutting back their number of employees because they know Obamacare is about to come into place and they had 60 employees, but they're firing 10, so they come under fifty employees because they don't want to come under Obamacare. The president has no understanding of what's happening in real people's lives."
