In a matter of weeks, Federal Unemployment extensions will end for over two million people. For those out of work over 99 weeks this makes little difference. They are already out of money. People out of work over two years feel tremendous despair at ever finding work again.
Some members of society are quick to criticize, claiming anyone unemployed that long could have found work. This isn't always the case. For older workers, demand is low. Older workers have higher health costs. They compete with college graduates fresh out of school. Employment discrimination against unemployed workers has reached profound levels.
Older workers find themselves going to temporary day labor markets, competing with 20-year-old Mexican laborers. The best jobs are McDonald's, Taco Bell and Dunkin Donuts.
With the termination of Federal Unemployment extensions, the last lifeline will be lost to people with nowhere to go. By the time a person is using Federal Unemployment Extensions savings are gone. Bills are prioritized with shelter being number one. It takes only one lost unemployment check to become homeless.
Millions of Americans are about to be dumped into the despair of poverty. With their demise comes an abrupt cutback in the economic well being of businesses frequented by the unemployed. It is well known that 100% of all unemployment checks go straight back into the economy.
There is still a chance that Congress will come round and extend Federal Benefits. I wouldn't bet my house on it. Playing with the lives of two people is frightening. Our elected officials don't seem to care.
With that in mind, older workers can try to build their own businesses. Self-employment stands a greater chance of success than regular employment. However, businesses are failing and which way do you turn?
For those with editing and writing skills, freelance websites offer a bounty of work. Unfortunately, the state of the global economy is such that freelance writing and editing jobs comes with stiff competition. Unemployed journalists with PHD's compete with writers from Mumbai writing for $1.00 per 1000 words.
There are a number of good paying freelance jobs for those with IT skills and language translation skills.
For the majority of older unemployed Americans, next year is not looking good. Unless Congress manages to find their hearts and brains in very short order, many people are going to be living in cars. God Bless America. God Bless the World.
