Unemployed - Are They Facing Hiring Biases

ByRosaline L Louallen-Phillips

The Unemployed Buzz
Have you heard the buzz about the jobs bill President Obama is trying to put in place? This particular bill is to be put in place to prohibit employers from discriminating against the unemployed, mainly those that have been out of work for a long period. Yes, the buzz for a year or more now is that employers feel they don't want to hire someone who's been unemployed for a long period of time.

So You Ask Yourself Why?
You may ask, why would they feel a long term unemployed person shouldn't be hired, especially if they've been seeking work for quite some time? It seems the answer to this is because they look at an applicant and feel it should not have taken that individual so long to find something, what have they been doing, sitting around watching television? Goofing off when obviously bills need to be paid. Yes, you may feel it seems stupid for what we would think are intelligent people to think this way, but it's real, which is causing many Americans the pain of not getting hired, not being able to fee their children, and oftentimes close to or becoming homeless.

Let's Talk About the Bill's Proposal
The proposal will eliminate unlawful employment practices and it is mainly geared towards businesses containing fifteen or more employees that are refusing to hire a person because of their unemployment status. If a company is found to be in violation, unsuccessful applicants could sue for any damages made to them, very similar to if an employer discriminates against a person on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin.

Of course President Obama and other White House officials see this discrimination issue as a very serious problem, especially during these very hard and difficult economic times. There are reports that have been made to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, stating that employment agencies as well as job websites have been posting job openings excluding those that are unemployed. The bill will also help to eliminate these types of practices.

Republicans and others seem to feel there is no need to put such a bill in place, but shouldn't they ask those people that are experiencing these actions because I'm sure they'll say "we need something put in place to stop these type of practices."

What Can We do
You may ask the question - "Even if this bill was passed, how would one know whether or not discrimination is actually happening?" An employer could easily say you didn't have the skills, experience, education, and the list could go on and that's why you weren't hired. Now is when many of us need to begin taking our lives and futures into our own hands. It's time for many of us to begin thinking that maybe the traditional 9:00-5:00 job is the past and consider other things for the future. Have you ever considered working for yourself from home? Just think, you don't have to worry about being discriminated against, you don't have to worry about losing another job, you don't have to worry about fight with traffic or crowded buses/trains. You can wake up and begin your day from the comfort of your own home.

Where Do You Begin
If you're not sure where or how to even get started, begin doing some research, there are many great options to get started with working online. Before working with any online company, doing your research will help you figure out which companies are legitimate. I love working from home, but I must say it too, like any 9:00-5:00 job takes work to be successful. But if you work at it and have motivation as well as determination you can be successful working from home. Working online can even be an automobile to help drive your finances to some other interests you'd like to work from home.
