
Council tax is a tax on domestic property that is collected by your local authority. Generally, the bigger the property, the more tax is charged. Methods of payment vary, so it's worth checking out your options and choosing the one that suits you.
You should by now have received your council tax bill for 2012/2013.
The council tax banding charges are listed below. You can check what banding your property is by going to the Council tax valuation office where you can enter your post code and get your band. It is worth checking the band of all properties around you to make sure you have been banded correctly and are not being overcharged.

If you are living on your own you are entitled to 25% single person discountIf there are more than one persons living in the property the second person may still qualify you for a discount. Barnet Council currently offer various methods of payment
Direct Debit
You can set up monthly direct debits and choose to pay over 10 or 11 months. You can set up payment to be collected on any of the following dates 1st, 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th or 25th of the month. A copy of the direct debit form can be obtained by contacting Barnet Council or logging onto their website where you can download a copy of the form.
BACS or Internet Banking
If you choose to make payment by BACS or internet banking you will need to use the following Barnet Council ban details to make payment.

Payments using this method will require you to quote your council tax reference number usually beginning with a 4.
Paypoint or Post Office
Payments can be made at any post office or sub-post office. You can also make a payment at any retail outlet displaying the paypoint sign. You will need to make prior arrangements with Barnet Council who will send you a bar-coded bill which can be scanned at any of the nominated outlets. For a full list of Paypoint Outlets in the Borough of Barnet you should go to the Paypoint web site. There you can type in your post code and it will give you the nearest agent.
Yearly or half yearly payment
If you choose to pay for the whole year or make two six monthly payments you need to contact Barnet Council direct. You will need to send them an email to: local.taxation@barnet.gov.uk
